This was one of the last songs I wrote for the album. I wanted something that was more uptempo musically, but also a cry of pain, a shout in the darkness of grief. 

The Christian life is never escapism. Hope is truly tested in the face of struggle and I hope this song reflects that. Yes, suffering is momentary when seen in eternity (2 Corinthians 4:17) but on this side it casts a long shadow. In the midst of grief we may know there is hope, but it feels like being in darkness. And so we cry out for God to show us the light.

One more thought - I talk about experiencing the separation of death as ‘this hell’ because it is a little taste of the eternal separation that is ‘Hell’. It isn’t how it is meant to be, and it is not how it will be because of what Jesus has done.
