I wrote the first part of this on New Year’s Eve, 2021. We were at my in-laws, and I was surprised by how hard I found it. Downstairs were a family - complete, laughing together. And I just felt a huge hole.

Again, this is a song of faith in the face of that aching chasm. I know that God is ‘working all things for the good of those who love him’ (Romans 8:28) but I have to fight to see it at times. In the notes I had been taking over the preceding months there was a quote from Flannery O’Connor that encapsulates this act of faith: “I can, with one eye squinted, take it all as blessing.”
